Beautiful windowsill and storage wall with partitions

Meet Nique's latest DIY project: a clever combination of a stylish windowsill and a storage wall with dividers. Perfect for anyone who wants practical living without sacrificing style and elegance.

The Function of the Project

This DIY creation is designed to maximize space. The windowsill not only offers a beautiful spot to display your favorite decorations but also serves as functional storage. The dividers create organized compartments, so everything can be neatly stored.

The Construction

A significant portion of the structure is constructed with OSB 3 boards and pine woodwork. The light wood color creates a natural look that perfectly complements a modern interior. The flat, smooth finish makes it ideal for the living room or study, where the project will immediately draw attention.

Location and Appearance

Situated beneath a row of windows, this project truly shines. During the day, it illuminates the space beautifully and offers stunning views. In the evening, the natural wood tone creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The combination of functional design and aesthetics makes this arrangement a real eye-catcher.

Scandinavian Style

The Scandinavian style of this project is further emphasized by the simple lines and minimalist look. The light wood and sleek finish create a timeless and serene environment where you'll immediately feel at home.

Benefits of the Wood Types Used

OSB 3: Ideal for structures where strength and stability are required. It's also budget-friendly and easy to work with, perfect for any DIY enthusiast!

Timberboard Pine light: This wood species is known for its light, warm appearance and is ideal for exposed interiors. Add to that its ease of workability, and you have a winner!

Underlayment Finnish Pine B/BB: Known for its smooth finish and versatility, this material is ideal for interior projects requiring a high-quality finish.

DIY tips

A good tip when working with wood is to always mask off your cutting areas with masking tape. This reduces splintering and ensures a cleaner result. And remember, measuring is knowing: measure everything twice before you start sawing!

Step by step guide

Preparation

  • Measuring OSB panels Carefully measure the floorboards of the slanted storage wall. Check for any rounded or irregular shapes in the OSB panel; these must be cut beforehand for a proper fit. Measuring and preparing slats for the partitions: Make a frame of 4 slats for each partition: 2 long slats for the sides 2 short slats for the top and bottom. By choosing this order (long vertical, short horizontal) you can make the partition as visually square as possible, even if the wall is not 100% square. Measuring underlayment panels: Determine the position and dimensions of the partition wall. Mark the cutouts where the two partitions/panel doors will be placed. Preparing the windowsill: Measure the length and depth of the windowsill opening. Cut the Finnish pine panel to size. Lightly sand the edges beforehand for a neat installation.

Montage

  • OSB storage wall: Place the cut-to-size OSB panels on the floor structure of the storage wall. Use a spirit level to check that everything is level. Screw the OSB panels to the substructure. Partition wall (underlayment): Install the underlayment timber panels against the underlying structure. Cut the openings for the partitions/panel doors. Place the wooden frame of slats over the edges of the cutouts. First, the long slats on the left and right. Then, the short slats at the top and bottom. Check that everything looks square and, if necessary, tighten the screws/use mounting adhesive. Window sill: Install the metal profiles along the edges of the window sill. Use small screws. The profiles create a subtle edge that both provides protection and neatly conceals seams. Place the window sill in its place in the cutout. Apply mounting adhesive to the underside and press the window sill firmly into place. Check that the window sill is level (for a slight inward slope, allow a few mm of clearance if necessary).

Finish

  • Fill any gaps with caulk or wood filler. Sand lightly and finish with varnish, stain, or paint as desired. Storage wall and partition: Lightly sand all visible parts of OSB and underlayment. Fill in seams and screw holes with wood filler if desired. Finish with oil, varnish, or paint (OSB and underlayment are very absorbent; a primer is recommended). Check that the bulkheads/panel doors close properly and adjust them if necessary.

General experience

Delivery was easy thanks to the stickers with dimensions and specific markings. Unfortunately, the underlayment wood panels warped a bit, but we were able to fix that ourselves. The window sill made of wood panels (Finnish pine) was perfectly cut and we were able to assemble it immediately, as were the complete new bulkheads, including the floor, for the sloped wall.
