The Perfect Solution for your Hallway

Jeroen has designed an ingenious hallway closet that not only serves as a coat rack but also provides convenient storage for shoes and chargers. This project, created using custom-cut wood by TOSIZE.de, combines functionality and style.

Construction and Materials

The cabinet is made of MDF Natural panels, beautifully finished in a neutral color. It features a wooden shelf and metal hooks for hanging coats. The design also includes an integrated shoe rack with an easy-open flap, keeping the hallway neat and tidy.

The ideal place

Placed in the hallway, next to the stairs, the cabinet makes optimal use of the available space. Thanks to the custom-cut panels, it fits perfectly between the walls, so not a single centimeter is wasted.

Unique Features

The addition of a charger holder ensures that charging cables and devices are always within reach, without getting in the way. A handy mat can also be neatly stored underneath the cabinet.

Scandinavian Style

The sleek design and neutral colors create a minimalist Scandinavian look, giving the hallway a fresh and modern feel.

Why choose MDF Natural?

MDF Natural is an excellent choice for this project because of its versatility and smooth surface, ideal for painting and finishing. It offers the freedom to experiment with finishes and colors to achieve exactly the look you desire.

DIY Tips from the Expert

Use high-quality hinges for the shoe box lid to ensure smooth opening and closing. Also, ensure sturdy mounting hardware when installing the coat hooks so the whole family can hang their coats without worry.

Step by step guide

Preparation

  • Like many projects, this one also started with a practical problem: an inconvenient coat rack and a mountain of shoes that never got neatly stored. The alcove by the meter cupboard offered an opportunity to organize everything more efficiently. However, we couldn't find anything online that met our dimensions and requirements. So, it became a DIY project. After several rounds of measuring and drawing, a design emerged for a piece of furniture that could both store shoes and provide a place for coats. Everything was planned down to the last millimeter, ensuring the entire piece would fit seamlessly into the space.

Montage

  • To build it, we ordered all the individual planks from opmaatzagen.nl, complete with labels, which kept everything organized. Within a few days, the parts were ready, and the real work began: piecing together, gluing, screwing, and assembling. Thanks to the preparation, everything fit as planned. Still, it's always a challenge to transform individual planks into a solid whole, but with a little patience and precision, everything fell into place step by step.

Finish

  • After assembly came the finishing touches: varnishing and finalizing the details. Once the furniture was ready, it was immediately clear that the investment in time and attention had paid off. The shoes are now neatly hidden from view, the coat rack hangs in a logical place, and the furniture fills the alcove as if it had always been there. Practical and beautiful in a single solution.

General experience

Every year during the summer holidays, we tackle a room in our house. It's become something of a tradition, and this year it was the hallway's turn. It was desperately needed, too, because the coat rack had been hanging in the hallway from day one and was always in the way. Time for a better plan. There's a recess in the hallway with a door for the meter cupboard. That's exactly where a four-row tower of shoes always used to be. Not pretty, not practical. At the same time, that spot seemed ideal for moving the coat rack out of the hallway. However, screwing a coat rack directly onto the door didn't appeal to me; after all, appearances matter. So the search began. I couldn't find anything online that matched our measurements and taste, leaving only one option: build it myself. That began with endless measuring, drawing, measuring again, and drawing again. Finally, a plan emerged: a large container with a lid for all the shoes, chargers, and the car mat, plus a back panel for the coat rack. The entire piece of furniture had to slide seamlessly into the recess. When designing the layout, we meticulously planned everything down to the last millimeter. Everything was perfect: from overlapping planks to a small shelf at the bottom, the sides, and a piano hinge in between. We ordered everything custom-made from opmaatzagen.nl. The great thing about this is that the planks are delivered with clear labels, which made assembling them much easier. Within a few days, the whole stack was ready and waiting in the hallway. Then the fun part began: puzzling, gluing, screwing, priming, and varnishing. But bit by bit, the plan took shape, and once it was in place, everything fell into place. Literally and figuratively. The result is impressive: no more shoes lying around, a coat rack neatly out of the way, and a piece of furniture that looks like it's always been there. Everything fits perfectly into the alcove, exactly as we intended.
