Description

The stairs from the ground floor to the first floor were open, and we wanted them closed. Also the painting was not great. We have therefore decided to give the stairs a major upgrade by sealing the stairs, partially painting and cladding it with PVC.

Work description: how did you realize your project

I first looked up information on various DIY forums about sealing a staircase. After all, you want to know how to do this, and above all, you don't want it to crack after performing the job. I soon realized that cutting all risers to size is quite a chore. I have therefore already ordered these largely custom-made at TOSIZE.co.uk, together with the slats against which the risers are mounted. For this I took the height of a riser and a fixed length that was longer than the longest riser. These measurements were 17.4 cm x 125 cm. I ordered the risers in 12 mm plywood. I ordered the slats against which the risers are mounted in spruce, 12 x 12 mm. After the risers arrived, I sawed them exactly to size in terms of length, and provided them with the right angle if necessary. Same with the slats. Then I gave the top of each riser a small bulge by planing some wood (at the top), from the center to the sides. This ensures that there is 1 to 2 mm of 'free' on either side of the top of the board, and that the board bears especially in the middle, which prevents the stairs from cracking. The risers were then applied under light tension (tip: a car jack works great for this!) and all screw holes were filled (several times!), everything sanded, sealed and painted. Then painted the front of the risers black and the steps of the stairs covered with PVC and aluminum stair nosing.

Final size: What are the outer dimensions?
